As I am a Royal Academy of Arts ‘friend’ for the year, I am making the most of the membership and visiting often! I went to the Australia exhibition which again displayed a range of artwork, from the Aboriginal patterned paintings to the more familiar European and American paintings. Although there was some controversy shown with reactions to the exhibition, I thought it was interesting to see the contrast in how the landscapes and lifestyles were depicted by the opposing artists. I was enticed by some of the landscape paintings, especially Evening Shadows, Backwater of the Murray, South by H.J. Johnstone. I fell in love with this beautiful painting because of the paint work, Johnstone’s use of light, the composition and the environment itself.
